For the first show of our 2025-2026 season, Prophecy and Apocalypse, The Eno River Players are proud to present a workshop production of The Angel that Troubled the Waters, a collection of experimental religious plays by Thornton Wilder. Published in 1928, these plays, individually about five to ten minutes long, offer a rare window into Wilder’s bold early experiments in theatrical form.

Each play opens a door –– open only for an instant–– into a divine world. Among the figures who appear are Satan, A Tall Thin Dreamy Man, The Mistaken Invalid, and the great Leviathan. As Wilder himself explained, he hoped that these plays might  “discover the spirit that is not unequal to the elevation of the great religious themes, yet which does not fall into a repellent didacticism.”

A cast of ten will perform nine plays, with a spirit of play and wonder which defines our work. The whole event runs 60-70 minutes, with no intermission.
